MEET GARRETT SOAMES

A Medical provider. Entrepreneur. Author. Advocate for Healthcare Reform.

After years of watching patients, families, providers, and communities struggle with the rising cost and growing complexity of healthcare, Garrett began documenting the structural problems that keep meaningful reform out of reach.

Flatlined: How Profit Broke American Healthcare brings those insights together in a direct, readable case for action and playbook.

THE STORY BEHIND FLATLINED

Built on experience. Written for change.

After two decades on the front lines of American healthcare, including emergency care, COVID-19 response, and experience abroad, Garrett Soames saw the human cost of a system failing its patients, wrote Flatlined as a roadmap for change, and founded Patients Before Profit to educate Americans and catalyze a movement for meaningful healthcare reform.

A DEFINING PERSPECTIVE

Two healthcare systems. One lifelong commitment.

Early in his medical career, Garrett worked in Malawi, Africa, within one of the world’s most resource-limited healthcare systems. Despite having far fewer resources than the United States, he witnessed extraordinary compassion, ingenuity, and patient-centered care. Most strikingly, if someone could get themselves to the hospital, they received all the care that was available—treatment wasn’t withheld simply because they couldn’t afford it. Returning home to practice at Emory University Hospital gave him a rare perspective on the striking differences between healthcare systems. The contrast challenged many of his assumptions about access, resources, and the role of money in medicine, helping shape his commitment to improving American healthcare.

“Better healthcare is not defined by resources alone. It is defined by how effectively those resources are used to serve people.”

BEYOND MEDICINE

A life grounded in family, learning, and service.

When Garrett is not practicing medicine, writing, speaking, or developing healthcare initiatives, he enjoys spending time with his two daughters.
He also continues his studies, participates in strength training, and explores innovative ways to improve healthcare through education, technology, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
His personal and professional experiences continue to shape one central belief: America can build a better healthcare system when people are equipped and inspired to demand it.

He believes meaningful change will require participation from patients, providers, business leaders, policymakers, and citizens across the country.

Healthcare reform should belong to the people whose lives depend on it.
